Grading Jersey Coins:
The George V Series

You must know each issue and what to judge in grading.

On the obverse, look at the crown and pay attention to the jewels. We all know that diamonds are a girl's best friends, but it certainly helps here too.

On the reverse, look at the lions and judge their grade. Just as in real life, the lions' mane is a signal of quality, and ignorance comes with consequences.

Each species is slightly different, look and learn.


For both the half penny and penny on the obverse check these high points on the crown.




The Half Penny
1911-1923


Check for wear on the nostrils
on each lion.
1923


The top lion's mane is only partially present.
The middle lion's mane is only partially present.
The bottom lion's mane is not existent.
1926


All the manes are flat.
1931


The top lion's mane is very strong.
The middle lion's mane is very strong.
The bottom lion's mane is partially present.
1933 1935


The top lion's mane is very strong.
The middle lion's mane is very strong.
The bottom lion's mane is mostly present.



The Penny
1911-1923


Check for wear on the nostrils
on each lion.
The bottom lion's paws are weak.
1923 1926


The top lion's mane is only partially present.
The middle lion's mane is mostly present.
The bottom lion's mane is not existent.
1931


The top lion's mane is very strong.
The middle lion's mane is very strong.
The bottom lion's mane is partially present.

The top lion's mane is typically only partially present.
The middle lion's mane is mostly present.
