In 1976, Haiti did not mint standard circulating coins for daily use; instead, they issued several collectible, commemorative silver and gold proof coins. The most common 1976 Haitian coins are the 25 Gourdes and 50 Gourdes pieces.

These pieces were struck as part of global collector series and were often minted at the San Francisco Mint in the United States.

The primary 1976 issues include: 25 Gourdes (Bicentenary of the United States): Commemorates the U.S. Bicentennial.

It features a battle scene (often depicting the Siege of Savannah where Haitian volunteers fought) and the years 1776–1976. It contains 8.375 grams of .925 fine silver.

50 Gourdes (Holy Year/Jubilee): Commemorates the Catholic Holy Year and often features Pope Paul VI. This coin is larger, weighing 16.75 grams of .925 fine silver.

Montreal-Innsbruck Olympic Series: Part of a multi-year Olympic commemorative set, which also included gold editions.
